Spring Ready: The Essential Van Parts to Replace Before Your MOT

Spring is officially here. Flowers are out, the weather still can’t decide what it's doing and we are eagerly awaiting the UK Bank holidays to start.  For van owners, it’s the season where the grit of winter is washed away, and the "To-Do" list for the year ahead begins. But before you get stuck into the heavy lifting, there’s one date on the calendar that causes more stress than a closed M25: The MOT.

Last year, nearly 40% of vans failed their MOT on the first attempt. The frustrating part? Many of those failures were for simple, replaceable items that could have been swapped out on a Saturday morning in the driveway.

To help you stay on the road (and out of the re-test centre), here are the key items you should check and replace this spring to ensure your van is MOT-ready.

The "Visible" Culprits: Wiper Blades & Bulbs

It sounds basic, but Lighting and Signaling is the #1 cause of MOT failure in the UK.

  • The Check: Test your indicators, hazards, brake lights, and that often-forgotten number plate light.

  • The Fix: Don’t wait for the tester to tell you a bulb is out. Replacing a headlight unit or a simple bulb is a five-minute job.

  • Wipers: If your blades are streaking or "chattering" after a winter of clearing frost and salt, they’re an MOT fail. Fresh rubber is a cheap way to ensure a "Pass" under the "Driver’s View" category.

Suspension: Dealing with Pothole Season

Winter is brutal on British roads, and spring usually reveals the damage in the form of deep potholes. Suspension issues account for nearly 1 in 10 failures.

  • The Check: Listen for "clunks" when hitting bumps or notice if the van is sitting lower on one side.

  • The Fix: Check your coil springs for fractures and your shock absorbers for leaks. At TPUK, we see a huge surge in demand for Transit suspension parts every spring—swapping these out now prevents a "Major" defect on your certificate.

Braking Power: Pads, Discs, and Sensors

Your brakes worked hard in the slush and mud of February. By March, they might be reaching their limit.

  • The Check: Does the pedal feel "spongy"? Is there a high-pitched squeak or a grinding sound?

  • The Fix: Pull the wheels off and check the thickness of your pads. If they’re under 1.5mm, they need to go. Don’t forget to check your ABS sensors—a dashboard warning light for the braking system is an automatic fail.

Steering Health: Tie Rod Ends & Ball Joints

Precision is everything when you're navigating tight delivery routes. Excessive "play" in the steering wheel is a red flag for MOT testers.

  • The Check: Feel for any vibration or "wandering" while driving on a straight road.

  •
  • The Fix: Worn ball joints and tie rod ends are common wear-and-tear items for hard-working vans. Replacing these components not only secures your MOT pass but also saves your tyres from uneven (and expensive) wear.

Filtration & Emissions: The DPF and Fuel Filters

With ULEZ and stricter emissions standards, your exhaust system is under more scrutiny than ever.

  • The Check: Is your van blowing smoke? Is the engine management light on?

  • The Fix: A clogged fuel filter can cause poor combustion, leading to higher emissions. Replacing your filters and ensuring your EGR valve is clean can be the difference between a clean tailpipe test and a failure.
